Ask ChatGPT or any AI chat box for an Houston web design agency and it will probably hand you a short list. Every agency on that list should understand AI search if they’re building websites in 2026. Their own websites should be applying best practices for AI SEO. So what does that mean? It means we can run checks on them to find out which are actually applying what they sell.

Those checks come down to four things a site built for AI search does:

  1. It carries its business facts in the page code.
  2. Lets AI crawlers in.
  3. Names the service it sells.
  4. Loads fast on a phone.

All four can be measured, so I measured them. Between September 9 and 11, 2026, I checked 12 Houston agencies and scored each out of 19.

How I scored every agency

A. Business facts in the page code — Max: 3 points.

A site can carry a hidden block of labels, called structured data, that names the business, where it sits, and what it sells. Machines read those labels instead of guessing from the layout. I opened each homepage’s source and counted the label types.1

If you want more on the topic, I covered it in does schema markup help AI SEO.

B. Access for AI readers — Max: 3 points.

ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google each send out an automated reader to fetch pages. A site’s /robots.txt file tells those readers which pages they may take. Some sites also publish /llms.txt, a plain-text summary written for those readers. I checked whether each site lets the AI readers in and whether it publishes that summary.2

More on those files in what your website tells AI assistants.

C. A named AI search service — Max: 3 points.

An agency selling AI search should say so somewhere a buyer can find it. I looked for a service page, a mention on the services list, or a blog post, in that order.3

For what that service should cover, I wrote it up in AI search optimization for small businesses.

D. Mobile speed — Max: 10 points.

Lighthouse is Google’s test of how fast a page loads on a phone, scored 0 to 100. I ran Lighthouse five times on each homepage in mobile mode, averaged the five, and divided by ten.4

For what the speed numbers mean, see Core Web Vitals explained.

What the scores mean for your next website

Every agency on this list is asking you to trust it with a website that AI assistants will read. The four measurements above are what those assistants find when they arrive. So the table shows which agencies have already done that work on the one site they control completely, their own.

The work behind those measurements is the same work you would be paying for. An agency whose own site carries its business facts, lets the AI readers in, names the service and loads fast on a phone has already done it once.

The first three measurements show intent. The last measurement, speed, shows skill. Nothing can be added later to fix it, because it is the sum of every choice made while the site was built, from how much code loads to how the images are handled.

That is why speed is the column where the agencies separate. The other three columns are full of matching scores, while speed runs from 3.6 to 9.4, and only one homepage in the group scores above 90 on a phone.

You do not have to repeat the scoring to use it. Ask any agency you are considering the four questions behind it:

  • Does its own site carry its business facts as structured data, and does it let the AI readers in?
  • Does it name its services using the best practices for AI citation, and how does its homepage score on mobile?

An agency that has done the work will know the answers and show you the files. Treat those answers as part of the proposal.

The work itself, getting a business named in AI answers, is sold interchangeably as Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), AI Search Optimization (AISEO), and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO). Whatever name is on the quote, the agency’s own site should already pass the four measurements that yours will be judged by.

Frequently asked questions

Using four measurements, as of September 11, 2026, Desque scored 18.4 of 19, Reneka Digital 16.4 and Zen in Tech 16.2.

All three carry their business facts in the page code as structured data, let AI readers in, and name their services using AI Citation techniques. The order between them comes down to mobile speed. The table in this post shows all twelve, and any agency on it can move up by fixing what it is missing.

Start with the Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org, which reads the hidden labels a page carries about the business. Paste in the agency’s homepage address. An agency that practices good AI SEO will show an extensive set of data types and labels, organized together under one graph rather than scattered in separate blocks. They should be using the rules published by schema.org and developers.google.com/search/.

Then open /robots.txt, the file listing what automated readers may fetch, and see whether GPTBot is allowed or blocked. Open /llms.txt as well, the plain-text summary written for AI readers.

Finish with the homepage in PageSpeed Insights on mobile, because an agency selling AI search should pass its own test.

Does a high score mean AI assistants will recommend my business?

Not on its own, because these four measurements show whether a site is readable and fast for the programs AI assistants send out. Being named also depends on what your pages say and how many other sites reference you. Treat the four as a minimum.

Footnotes

  1. Five or more label types on the homepage, including Organization or LocalBusiness, earns 3 points. Three or four types earns 2. Less than 2 types earns 1. None earns 0. Only the homepage was checked, so labels on inner pages do not count here. I also saw some uses of the deprecated ProfessionalService label, but I did not count it against the score. ↩︎

  2. Both /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt present earns 3. /llms.txt alone earns 2. Neither file, with nothing blocked, earns 1. A /robots.txt that turns away GPTBot or ClaudeBot earns 0 no matter what else the site publishes. ↩︎

  3. A page dedicated to the service using AI Citation best practices earns 3. The service named on a general services page earns 2. A blog post about it earns 1. Nothing earns 0. ↩︎

  4. Scores are Lighthouse mobile performance, run five times per homepage between September 9 and 11, 2026, and averaged, then divided by ten for the points. PageSpeed Insights, Google’s free version of the same test, gives a similar but not identical number. ↩︎
